Why Whole Grains Aren’t As Healthy as You Think [Video]

Whole grains – they’re a crucial component of a healthy diet, right? Not so, says Integrative Nutrition visiting teacher Dr. William Davis.

According to this cardiologist and author of the runaway bestseller Wheat Belly, grains are in fact “incredibly destructive genetic monsters” that do more damage than a Snickers bar – and yes, that includes whole grains!

In this interview, Dr. Davis shares why whole grains aren’t as healthy as you think, how wheat today is different from 75 years ago, and what to eat to reduce your cravings (hint: it’s not gluten-free cookies.) Watch the video below!

3 Reasons Diet Programs Don’t Work (and Health Coaches Do)

Billions of people want to lose weight and desperately turn to fads and diet programs, yet so few are actually able to lose it and keep it off.

The weight-loss industry is worth over $20 billion dollars, including diet programs, books surgery, pills, potions, and everything else related to weight loss.

Most people will lose weight on any given diet program for a limited period of time and then revert to a less disciplined way of eating. What they’re missing is the accountability, supportive, savvy holistic health guide with nutrition knowledge and first-hand experience.

So, if the diet industry is so wealthy, wouldn’t you think that it would have a positive impact on health and lead to long-term, sustainable weight loss? Not so fast.

Here are three reasons diet programs don’t work

1. Dieters tend ignore their own bio-individual needs – the diet that works for your best friend may not work for you. People latch onto meal plans, calories, and fat grams, rather than listening to their bodies and truly choosing what’s right for them in each moment.

2. People wanting to lose weight tend to deprive themselves and then have overwhelming cravings, quickly sliding into a restrict-binge cycle.

For example, if someone is binging on chocolate every day, they might need more intimacy and love in their lives to satisfy them.

3. People on diets often ignore primary food, the core concept that what feeds us on a much deeper level than food is a satisfying career, loving relationships, a spiritual practice, and regular exercise. Most people think it’s all about food and the specific diet they’re on, but the truth is that food isn’t the most important part.

If you have a job you hate, for example, you’re much more likely to eat nonstop throughout the day to distract yourself and stave off boredom.

27 High Glycemic Foods

A post I never posted…..enjoy

Today is my B-day (yeah I know, have a glass of almond milk for me). Earlier this year i found out that I was allergic to white rice. I thought it was gluten but, what i really was allergic to was high glycemic foods. My body responds better to food that are lower in glycemic. In two weeks I had lost 6lbs and 5% body fat.  WOW..

By Dr. Mike • • , Insulin Resistance Diet

Are high glycemic foods are the newsaturated fat? Possibly. A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed a strong association between high glycemic foods and risk of heart attack. Countless scientists now believe that high glyecmic foods provide a greater threat to your health than saturated fat.

I do wonder if the danger associated with eating lots of high glycemic foods isn’t just due to their impact on your blood sugar levels (quick primer – high glycemic index foods cause rapid increases in your blood sugar following a meal while low glycemic foods do not) but also their nutrient quality. If you look at the list below you’ll notice that high glycemic foods are very low in nutrients – unless, like in the case of Total cereal, the nutrients have been put back into them. High glycemic foods provide you with the 1-2 nutrition knockout combination of death – big changes in blood sugar and devoid of nutrients.

Check out the list below and hopefully you’re not eating too many of these foods throughout the day. As you know, nutrient timing is very important for optimizing your diet. Using a nutrient timing approach, we have a window of time where high glycemic foods are beneficial – post workout. Having high glycemic foods like Gatorade, yams, and white rice following your workout will provide a well timed spike in the hormone insulin which has been shown to accelerate how fast you replenish you muscle glycogen stores (i.e. sugar stored in your muscles), increase protein synthesis (i.e. muscle building), and stop muscle breakdown. So don’t demonize all high glycemic foods, just optimize when you eat them.

How to Fight Depression and Anxiety

If you want to improve your mood, lower feelings of stress, reduce cravings and addictions then one of the best ways to see these benefits is to improve your diet.

Food cravings are common. It’s estimated that 97% of women and 68% of men battle with food cravings, especially for foods high in sugar, fat, or carbohydrates.

These cravings are usually a reaction to stress, anxiety, or depression and generally have little to do with actual hunger. The good news is that you can actually better control your moods, cravings, and be happier by eating certain foods.

How to Fight Depression and Anxiety

Neurotransmitters Influenced by Foods by Dr. Josh Axe

One of the key factors when it comes to boosting your mood with food is consuming foods that support Neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are your brains “messengers” and control mood, energy levels, appetite, and several other functions in the body. AND they’re significantly influenced by what we eat or don’t eat.

For example, the amino acid histidine is the building block for the neurotransmitter histamine which controls appetite and how your body burns calories. Inadequate amounts of histidine can lead to your body not knowing when it is full and when to stop eating.  Foods that can naturally boost histidine levels are kale, collard greens, spinach, bananas, and wild caught fish and organic meat.

Carbs, Fat, and Serotonin

Do you tend to reach for a cookie or cake when feeling sad and never a lean chicken breast or celery? Why is it that the combination of fat and sugar seem to provide relief from negative emotions? It has been scientifically proven that high carbohydrate foods trigger a release of serotonin, a natural opioid, which acts in the brain similarly to the drug opium.

Therefore, consuming a high carbohydrate food actually does release a chemical that improves mood. People that are unable to control their carbohydrate cravings have actually been shown to have lower serotonin levels.  The problem is, long term consumption of foods high in sugar lead to weight gain, candida, and low energy, all of which can lead to symptoms of depression.

So how can you improve your serotonin without sugar and unhealthy fat?  There are 2 keys to improving mood and beating food cravings with nutrition and they are consuming: Vitamin B12 and EPA Fats.

Vitamin B12 and B-Complex

Vitamin B12 is vitally important to support your neurological system, for energy, and “good mood” hormones.  If you want to get more Vitamin B12 consume RAW Dairy products like raw cheese, amasai, goat’s milk kefir and you can get B12 from wild caught salmon, eggs, grass-fed beef, organic poultry, or if you are a vegan make sure to supplement with RAW-B12.

To increase your intake of other B-vitamins such as folate, consume spinach, sunflower seeds, and dried herbs.  B-vitamins also help produce serotonin without the sugar toxicity and excess calories. Turkey, which is high in tryptophan, can also be used to produce serotonin. Other foods high in tryptophan include pineapple and eggs.

Omega-3 Fats

A systematic review published in 2004 of all the research conducted on omega-3s and depression showed that low intake of omega-3 fats is associated with greater rates of depressed mood. A study in the Archives of General Psychiatry showed that supplementation with EPA, an omega-3 fat, helped reduce symptoms of depression by 50%. This isn’t surprising since our brains and nervous systems are mostly made up of fat, 20% of which are omega-3s. Omega-3s work to reduce overall inflammation, which may help improve brain function overall.  Aim for at least 2 servings of wild-caught fish per week and take a daily omega-3 supplement  to get the most mood boosting benefit.

Key Points:

  • Food can significantly affect our mood via the action of neurotransmitters in our brain.
  • Although sugar and fat in combination can increase serotonin levels, a mood boosting neurotransmitter, other healthy foods like spinach, salmon and turkey can have the same effect.
  • Sufficient intake of omega-3 fats is essential for improving mood and relieving symptoms of depression.

COLDS AND FLU (Part 2)

Colds and flus are not only inconvenient and uncomfortable, they can also be extremely dangerous — especially to the very young and the very old. Unfortunately, modern medicine has little to offer in the treatment of colds and flu.

Depressing your immune system is obviously not the objective you want, but it is helpful to understand how your dietary and lifestyle choices can have a dramatic impact on weakening your defenses – thus making your more susceptible to the flu and other illnesses!

Here a few ways in which your immune system can be weakened:

  • Consuming Sugar and Refined Carbohydrates – studies have shown that just 1 tbsp of sugar can depress your immune system for up to 6 hours!
  • General Poor Nutrition – a lack of nutrients will not allow your immune system to function properly because the building blocks necessary for creating immune cells are absent.
  • Malabsorption and Poor Digestion – these are caused by digestive system problems (ie. leaky gut, low stomach acid, candidiasis, etc…) and poor digestion, specifically, can lead to large unwanted food particles seaping into the bloodsteam, which prompts the immune system to activate to destroy – this is how most food allergies develop. The first issue, malabsorption means that essential nutrients won’t be absorbed, and thus immune cells will be missing several key building blocks.
  • Drugs – drugs like antibiotics, steroid drugs, etc… can negatively impact your digestive system (leading to the problems just mentioned), while others can directly depress the function of your immune system.
  • Toxic or Improper Liver Function – the liver is your body’s most detoxification organ. If it is toxic (and thus not functioning properly) it won’t be able to detoxify your properly, leading to greater reabsorption of toxins, which will further depress your immune system. Since your liver also plays a massive role in the metabolism and production of fats, sugars, and proteins, these vital nutrients will also be affected!

These are just a few ways in which everyday people are weakening their immune systems.

But I know you’re not one of them, right?

Even if you are, I’m about to show a simple solution to build your immune system and your health so that you can stay healthy – all year round!

Fortunately, I have some suggestion to help. There is no need to suffer from colds and flu for days, or weeks at a time.

A good pathogen destroyer formula contains some of the most powerful anti-viral agents in nature.

Garlic

Garlic is one of the best infection fighters available for both bacterial and viral infections. One of its many ingredients, allicin, is a natural antibiotic that does not appear to create resistant bacteria strains. In addition, fresh garlic extract has been shown to be virucidal to many viruses.

Garlic possesses the ability to stimulate the immune system. It can stimulate the activity of the macrophages (white blood cells), which engulf foreign organisms, such as: viruses, bacteria, and yeast. Furthermore, garlic increases the activity of the T-helper cells (immune cells which are central to the activity of the entire immune system). Garlic may be particularly effective in treating upper respiratory viral infections due to its immune-enhancing properties and its ability to clear mucous from the lungs

The same component that gives garlic its strong odor is the one that destroys, or inhibits various bacteria and fungi. The component is allicin, and when crushed, combines with the enzyme allinase and results in antibacterial action equivalent to 1% penicillin.

Garlic is also effective against strep, staph, and even anthrax bacteria

Onion

Everything that’s been said about Garlic can be said about onion. Onions and garlic share many of the same powerful sulfur bearing compounds that work so effectively as anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents.

Ginger

Ginger has been traditionally used to treat colds and flu. Chinese studies have shown that ginger helps kill influenza viruses, and an Indian report shows that it increases the immune system’s ability to fight infection.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive leaf extract has a long history of being used against illnesses in which microorganisms play a major role. In more recent years, a drug company discovered that in vitro (test tube) an extract from olive leaf (calcium elenolate) was effective in eliminating a very broad range of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and yeast/mold/fungus.

Habenero and Horseradish

These are stimulants that quicken and excite the body. They energize the body (helping it to marshal its defenses against invading viruses). In addition, they help to carry blood to all parts of the body.

They are also diaphoretics and thus help raise the temperature of the body, which increases the activity of the body’s immune system.

Horseradish, in partidcular, contains volatile oils that are similar to those found in mustard. These include glucosinolates (mustard oil glycosides), gluconasturtiin, and sinigrin, which yield allyl isothiocynate when broken down in the stomach. In test tubes, the volatile oils in horseradish have shown antibiotic properties, which may account for its effectiveness in treating throat and upper respiratory tract infections. At levels attainable in human urine after taking the volatile oil of horseradish, the oil has been shown to kill bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections, and one early trial found that horseradish extract may be a useful treatment for people with urinary tract infections.

Liquid Ionic Zinc

Like colloidal silver, liquid zinc is anti-bacterial and anti-viral, but without the potential toxicity issues found with silver. Zinc is found in all body fluids, including the moisture in the eyes, lungs, nose, urine, and saliva. Proper zinc levels offer a defense against the entrance of pathogens. In the 1800’s, surgeons used zinc as an antiseptic/antibiotic after surgery; they noted its amazing healing properties. Wounds would heal, at times, as quickly as 24 hours after an operation, without swelling, and scarring was barely noticeable after a short period of time.

Oil of Wild Mountain Oregano

Numerous studies have shown wild mountain oregano oil (not to be confused with the oregano found in your kitchen) to be a potent antimicrobial. It has been proven useful as an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent rivaling even pharmaceutical antibiotics such as streptomycin, penicillin, vacnomycin, nystatin, and amphotericin in it’s ability to eliminate microbes. Remarkably it accomplishes this without promoting the development of drug resistant strains and other problems often attributed to the use of standard antibiotics. In addition to this already impressive list of abilities Oregano Oil is also a powerful parasitic expellant.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract was originally developed as an antiparasitic, but studies quickly showed that it had the ability to inhibit the growth of not only parasites, but fungi, viruses, and bacteria as well. The active ingredients of grapefruit seed extract are non-toxic and are synthesized from the seed and pulp of certified organically grown grapefruit. The process converts the grapefruit bioflavonoids (polyphenolics) into an extremely potent compound that is being used to kill strep, staph, salmonella, E. Coli, candida, herpes, influenza, parasites, fungi, and more.

Apple-Cider Vinegar

ACV (Apple-Cider Vinegar) serves several functions in the garlic tonic formula:

  • It’s the tincture medium for the formula, as opposed to alcohol (which is the tincture medium in an immune tonic).
  • ACV is anathema to all kinds of germs that attack the throat. In effect, it acts like a sponge and draws out throat germs and toxins from the surrounding tissue.
  • And finally, ACV stimulates a condition called acetolysis — in which toxic wastes that are harmful to the body are broken down and rendered harmless.

Using Garlic Tonic

At the first sign of a cold or flu, start taking your garlic tonic. Take 3-10 droppers-worth every hour in juice. Tomato juice works great. All of the garlic and onion and “hot” stuff in the tonic make it taste like a Snappy Tom. (For sore throats, make sure you let it wash down the throat.) Keep taking until you finish the bottle.

Take in conjunction with an immune tonic and look for the cold or flu to break in 24-hours!

Now that your read to the bottom: Here are some remedies that have help (if not healed) along the way.

  • ACV Tea – warm water with 1-2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, juice of 1/2 lemon, and 1 tsp of honey
  • Throat Soother Tea – warm water with 1 tbsp ACV, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 tsp honey, 1 inch cube ginger (grated and juiced squeezed), and pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Gargling with warm salt water with pinch of cayenne pepper added – spicy but it’s an awesome antibacterial.
  • Neti pot (using warm salt water) to clear out blocked sinuses.
  • Drinking kombucha daily for it’s terrific probiotics. Kids also receive their infant probiotics.
  • Increasing vitamin D3 intake (close to 10,000 IU/day)
  • 2-3 tbsp fish oil daily
  • Halls throat lozenges (just got these last night)
  • ColdFX – I’ve never tried if before so I’m giving it a go.

All of these weapons are in addition to eating a healthy diet.

Feel free to hijack these remedies if you’re feeling a little under the weather. Each of them plays an important role in supporting your immune system, lowering inflammation, and killing off bacterial/viral infections.

Look the best for your holiday photos, and feel and look GREAT in the process. Check out “25 detox and smoothies”. You’ll be happy you did.
